the heel stone, who looks quite forlorn, i daresay.

apparently the levelling of the land is the inverse of what would be typically expected.  it is defensive for preventing escape of enemies from within the henge… but that’s all speculation, as are most things

the heel stone can be seen through one of the middle arcs.  it was a key component to the arrangement of the stones and their alignment with the sun.

down the middle of this picture, running over the hills, is a, barely visible, ancient glacial path that is very significant to a new theory about the placement of stonehenge.  there is a part of the path, leading right to stonehenge that perfectly aligns with the sun during the solstice.  the shadows cast by the rocks during this time of year follow the path, suggesting that this place was sacred because it was built to commemorate this incredible natural coincidence.  due to the lack of recorded habitation in the area, it is believed that another (wooden) henge, durrington walls, was a gathering place for the people, who then followed a path to the nearby river, disembanked where marked by stones and travelled to stonehenge during the solstice.
