if you live in haines, those three numbers are very important.
the alaska area code is 907.
the next three digits for any local haines number are 766.
this results in many occasions on which, upon asking for a phone number, or providing one, there will only be four digits exchanged.
the first time this happens is a bit confusing. but then it becomes so automatic to see and hear only four digits that i kept forgetting it was something worth writing a post over (i hope?).
it’s as if every line in town is an extension code.
the summer inn? 2970
When I was a little girl that’s how Amesbury was. You never needed the 978 at all until I was almost in middle school. And until about 2nd grade most numbers in Amesbury were 388. So once you memorized your own number in Pre-K, it was just a matter of learning 4 more digits for each best friend. I can still list off 5 numbers or so that are just 4 digits, but that was all I needed.
Maybe I will just have to raise my children in Alaska for them to enjoy that type of simplicity.
